CHECK ON THE SYMPTOMS

What can be seen from the outside

  • Difficulty managing stress, irritability, nervousness
  • Detachment or withdrawal from others (physical and/or emotional)
  • Emotional blunting (no joy, no sadness) or constant overflow of emotions
  • « Everything is fine » attitude, there is no problem, taking the pain, concealing, hiding from what you are experiencing or have experienced, from what you are thinking or feeling
  • Careless or self-destructive behavior
  • Emotional or product dependence
  • Intense anger that occurs frequently or lasts for a long time
  • Avoiding painful thoughts or feelings about what you are experiencing, have experienced or are afraid of experiencing
  • Avoiding elements (people, places, conversations, activities, objects…) that arouse memories, thoughts or feelings similar to what you have experienced or are experiencing
  • Symptomatizing, e.g. back pain, sleep disorders, skin problems, but also chronic, autoimmune, inflammatory, viral diseases…
  • Continued feeling of intense fatigue, decreased interest in participating in activities that are important to you
  • Hypervigilance, sleep disorders
  • Difficulty concentrating, carrying out medium-term projects, being a support for others

How it may affect someone

  • Continued presence of negative emotions, such as fear, horror, anger, guilt or shame
  • Difficulty feeling pleasure, avoiding situations of celebration, joy, inability to experience happiness, satisfaction or affectionate feelings
  • Not knowing what you are feeling anymore: no longer knowing what is “normal” and what is not; no longer trusting your feelings
  • Feeling trapped, not free to act, not in control of your life, that things are getting out of hand
  • Feeling that you are never right, that others are always wrong or that you yourself are always in the wrong
  • Intense or prolonged psychological distress upon exposure to internal or external cues evoking or resembling an aspect of the traumatic event
  • Persistent or exaggerated negative beliefs or expectations about oneself, others, or the world (for example, “I’m bad”, “You can’t trust anyone”, “The world is extremely dangerous”)
  • Feeling that many things from the outside are intrusive

What someone may fear

  • Not being able to get out of what you are currently going through, that the scenario will repeat itself endlessly
  • Not finding a trusted person, outside help to change the situation
  • Losing control over what you might be subjected to from a third party
  • Losing control over what you could do to yourself (scarifications, suicidal ideas…) or to a third party (hitting, threatening, forcing…)
  • Not being able to protect yourself or a person for whom you are responsible from your own actions or those of a third party
  • Being surprised or overwhelmed by a situation
  • Painful memories that are recurrent, involuntary, and invasive / flashbacks come to the surface
  • Fearing the repetition of a situation you have experienced for yourself or for someone else
  • Fearing the repetition of a situation you have experienced in reality or in your dreams
  • Be re-exposed to a similar or identical situation

What can be hoped for

  • Being able to live a peaceful personal, professional and social life again
  • Being able to surprise oneself in dealing with a difficult situation, to gain confidence and self-esteem
  • Resolving a conflict situation and moving on to a new chapter
  • Being able to assert oneself in life in a positive way
  • Being able to protect oneself and/or others from re-experiencing a situation of conflict or violence
  • Being able to manage or experience the situation in a positive way (if you were to experience a situation similar or identical to something you have already experienced)
  • Being able to face and soothe painful recurrent, involuntary, and invasive memories / flashbacks
